THE MASTER BUILDERS’ AUSTRALIA
GOLF TOURNAMENT
(Competing for the M R Hornibrook Cup)
History
It was a happy thought which prompted A.W. (Bert) Baulderstone in May 1958 to request the South Australian (Master Builders) Association to place on the agenda for the 1958 Convention in Perth the idea of an annual Golf Tournament between States. Convention approved, requesting interested States to appoint delegates and confer. Subject to fruition it was resolved to call the Tournament the "M.R. Hornibrook Tournament". Victoria was requested to arrange a Golf Week as a trial, future action to be determined by the interest in and success of the trial week.
EXTRACTS FROM EXECUTIVE COUNCIL ~ MBFA ~ 2nd to 3rd JULY 1959
Golfing Tournament, Melbourne 20th-21st July 1959
Resolved:
"That the States be circularised by Federation regarding individual contributions toward a suitable trophy for this M.R. Hornibrook Golfing Tournament and that the matter be taken up in each State by the Federal delegates; that a maximum target of ₤25 from each of the six main States be aimed at and that the monies be forwarded to the Executive Director; that any surplus over the cost of the trophy be used to supply small replicas; that the President, the Executive Director and Mr Wal Morris of Victoria be authorised to select a first class trophy to the value of approximately ₤150 and that steps be taken to secure this trophy as soon as possible without waiting for the individual contributions to be submitted. "
and so the stage was set for the first interstate tournament for the M.R.Hornibrook Cup, hosted in Melbourne by Victoria. Teams from New South Wales and South Australia joined the Victorians in 2 match days of 27 holes each, at Kingswood Golf Course on Monday 20th July and at the Commonwealth Club on the Tuesday. At the closing buffet dinner the President of the Master Builders Federation of Australia Mr Jack McDougall called upon Mr (later Sir) Manuel Hornibrook, whose name has become synonymous with building in Australia, to present the cup which bears his name.
In presenting the trophy, Mr Hornibrook said that the event, by bringing together as it did builders from all over Australia, who in the friendly rivalry of sport would make new and enduring friendships, would be of great value to the industry.
Victoria defeated New South Wales with South Australia a very close third, to become the first holders of the magnificent cup. It should be noted here that the MBFA Executive Director at the time, Mr. Lin Dudley, characterised this first victory by Victoria as a "swindle". Some would say that history is "condemned to repeating itself." Others may merely comment...."prophetic words".
Adelaide was the venue in 1960, where three matches were played and the local team was the winner.
The scene shifted to Sydney where a combined New South Wales and Newcastle team took off the cup.
Queensland entered the tournament, held again in Melbourne, and the Victorian team again won.
The tournament was held in Brisbane. Newcastle, as independent members of the Federation, were represented and became serious contenders for the Cup. Here again Victoria proved too strong for the opposition.
A return to Adelaide. The traditional spirit of the tournament was again augmented by keen competition, the advancement of goodwill and the cementing of old and new friendships. Victoria won again.
Sydney was the venue for the 1965 Tournament and much was done by New South Wales to further augment the new and old friendships of the past. They even won the Cup and made it known they would be hard to beat next year.
A return to Melbourne saw the Victorians win the Cup on their home courses with several States hot on their heels. This year saw participation by a Tasmanian contingent for the first time.
Newcastle held the Tournament for the first time, and in so doing set a target hard to surpass. It also created another first by winning the Cup.
The host State was Queensland. A fine week was had on the "Gold Coast" but the southerners from Adelaide proved too good for the Sunshine States.
A return to Adelaide where the spirit of the Tournament was again renewed. Keen competition and renewed friendships were the order of the day. The cup was retained by South Australia.
Back to Sydney. Again the usual hospitality was extended. A sadder note this year being the death of Sir Manuel. The Cup was won by New South Wales.
Newcastle was the venue and their splendid hospitality proved too much for all but the Victorians who were proud to win the coveted trophy.
Victoria was the host State. After stealing a march on the first day, the South Australians held off all opposition and took the Cup back to Adelaide.
Tasmania held the tournament for the first time. Hobart was the venue and the Casino a big attraction. New South Wales recorded their fourth win.
Queensland were hosts and the competition was again held at the GoId Coast. They are to be congratulated on their first win and a most successful tournament.
Adelaide were hosts again and were successful once more. Competition was very keen. A good time was had by all.
New South Wales was host again. As always, old friendships were renewed. We played on top courses and with local knowledge and good golf the New South Wales team came out the victors.
Newcastle, the ever-popular host did a great job and capped it off with a very narrow win.
Victoria hosted yet another find tournament and competition was very close. New South Wales recorded their sixth win.
Tasmania hosted their second tournament in Hobart and celebrated the 21st Anniversary of the "Hornibrook" by recording their first ever win.
South Australia are honoured to again be hosts and wished all participants good golfing and good fellowship.
Queensland hosted a great week of hospitality on the Gold Coast. Congratulations and best wishes to South Australia, who were this year winners.
New South Wales did a magnificent job of organising this tournament but unfortunately the weather let them down, it poured down each golf day. They received some compensation for their efforts by winning the Cup.
Celebrating the 25th Anniversary at Newcastle, the players were hosted by Newcastle in their usual excellent manner — winners are grinners and South Australia had the widest grin you could imagine on their way home this year.
Victoria hosted the competition in Melbourne and were the ultimate winners.
Hobart hosted their third Tournament which was won by New South Wales.
Hosted by South Australia and won by South Australia.
Queensland hosted a splendid Tournament with a return to Brisbane and were rewarded for their efforts with a long awaited win.
Hosts — New South Wales. In Australia's Bi-Centenary year, the Tournament was recognised as part of the Celebrations. Sydney is to be congratulated for a job well done and on winning the Tournament.
All players converged on Victoria and once again the courses were in top condition, proving difficult to all except South Australia.
Newcastle were winners all round as hosts and winners.
Hobart turned on its usual top quality programme and demanding courses. Queensland proved too good for the week, taking the Cup back home.
It is always a delight to play golf in Adelaide and this year was no different. The competition was fierce and keen, with Victoria being the fiercest and keenest team overall.
Travelling north to the land of Sunshine and meter maids, players enjoyed Brisbane's hospitality to the max and renewed longstanding friendships and established some new ones. Victoria had no problem transporting the spoils by armoured guard 'south of the border'.
Sydney turned on a great Tournament including the variation of a Shot-Gun Start one day. Good fellowship was enjoyed by all with Tasmania spiriting the spoils back to the homeland for the second time.
Victoria is consistent with its sand belt courses in Melbourne where the quick greens and strong winds blew the Cup right into the hands of the host team.
Newcastle, as hosts, extended a very warm welcome to Gold Coast (QLD) in their first M.R. Hornibrook as a regional team. Courses were Horizons, Steelworks and Newcastle. Victoria was victorious.
Launceston, Tasmania turned it on to give competitors an insight into the 'top half' of Tasmania and to enjoy the hospitality of the nation's oldest provincial city. The Gold Coast in only their second appearance in their own right, were worthy winners of the Cup.
South Australia and appropriately Adelaide was the venue for 40th Tournament. It was South Australia all the way as Bert Baulderstone initiated the first M.R. Hornibrook and the South Australian team won this milestone event.
We visited Sydney, the Olympic city and saw first hand the magnificent Stadium Australia and the modern Olympic Village. Bonnie Doon, New South Wales and The Lakes golf courses were most impressive and favoured the Gold Coast.
Gold Coast hosted their first ever Tournament since becoming a member and did it in grand style —as did Newcastle winning the Cup in a close finish.
Just to "wet" the appetite, Melbourne "showered" us with their hospitality which saw the last day washed out, however a great week was enjoyed by all — Victoria 'came in from the rain' overall winners for the week.
Novocastrian hospitality at its best — first class courses (food & golf), Hunter Reds and pristine white beaches. Featuring quality golf facilities throughout Port Stephens, Hunter Valley and Lake Macquarie regions. Newcastle recorded its second win in three years.
A return after 12 years to the southern region of Tasmania around the State capital of Hobart. Perfect weather and a victory by Victoria ended another memorable week of competition and friendship.
Back in Brisbane, first time since 1993, great weather, great hospitality and some 'challenging courses' saw Victoria run out winners, making it two in a row.
South Australia hosted the Tournament and the weather for golf was perfect, a bit wet on Wednesday. The golf venues were pleasant, played at Kooyonga Golf Club, Glenelg Golf Club and Grange Golf Club, all prepared in top condition. Victorian hat-trick.
New South Wales were our gracious hosts and we were installed in luxury at Star City. Once again great courses - Camden Lakeside, Terry Hills and NSW. What more could you ask for ? Victoria made it four in a row.
Gold Coast was the host and a competitive tournament was anticipated playing on testing courses, Coolangatta Tweed, Arundel Hills and Robina Woods. Unfortunately the weather intervened and the first and second days play was cancelled due to inclement weather. The final day was completed but, for the first time in 'Hornibrook' history the tournament had to be abandoned due to only one day's play being completed.
Melbourne was the venue for the 50th Anniversary Tournament and a record field of 184 players enjoyed excellent golf conditions and hospitality. Yarra Yarra, Keysborough & Kingston Heath. The Victorian team came out on top.

Tasmania welcomed players back to Hobart where they played at Royal Hobart, Kingston Beach and Tasmania. The wild wet weather that preceded and followed the tournament abated for the whole week when we enjoyed the most perfect cool summer days. Without Jack Carr, Victoria was without a helm and South Australia stepped in and won the Tournament for the first time since 1998.
