VALE ~ Don Fraser
|
He was a highly regarded friend of many, affectionately known as "Jerry" (as in Springer) across the wider Hornibrook golfing fraternity.
In addition to being a single figure golfer in his younger days, Don was also a representative hockey player and a first grade cricketer.
Music also played a major part in Don’s life. He was a highly regarded saxophonist and clarinet player, playing in a number of bands in the Newcastle area over many years.
Our deepest sympathy is extended to Don’s wife Roberta (Bobby) and family

VALE ~ Harry Simpson
From NSW MB & E Golf Club
Posted: Monday 12/09/2022
Gentlemen
I received a call on Sunday night from a close relative of Harry Simpson advising me that Harry would not make it past the weekend.
Harry had attended several Hornibrook events over the years was expected to pass away after being involved in an accident whereby he fell off his push bike during a casual ride.
Harry's last wish was to advise the Hornibrook Teams that he was so looking forward to attending this year's event but that this accident had set him back and would not allow him to attend.
I personally did not know Harry well, but the message I received resonated with me as to the true meaning that the event had for Harry.
The enjoyment and friendships that have developed over the years in attendance of this event meant a lot to Harry and it's not often that we are reminded by those that have passed.
May he rest in peace.
Regards

Hornibrook 2021 ~ Cancelled
The Hornibrook event scheduled for Sydney 10 to 15 Oct 2021 has been cancelled. See the details below received from MBE Golf Sydney.
Good morning gents,
It is with regret I write to inform you that we here at Sydney have made the decision to cancel the National Tournament for 2021.
We have not taken this decision lightly, but with the Covid crisis escalating at a rapid rate and potentially becoming a regular part of our lives for some months to come, we believe we have no choice as we approach the 90 day period which will begin to attract financial penalties if we delay our decision any longer.
Having made this decision we are happy to let the Gold Coast take over with the 2022 tournament, and we hope the pandemic is behind us by then.
As Graeme is away for another week, I ask that you pass on this news to your teams and we will be in touch again when he returns. Please stay safe.

Hornibrook 2021 ~ Cancellation policy as we know at moment.
1. Crown Plaza Accommodation: If government restrictions are in force to stop you travelling to Sydney then a full refund from Crown Plaza is applicable for any accommodation costs.
2. Registration fee of $900. I need to discuss this in detail with our committee, we would intend to refund as much money as possible but would depend on expenses incurred by us that are non-refundable and at what date withdrawal is made.
As you can understand we are not out to rip anyone off, but as we are `booking function rooms, lay day activities, golf courses, bus travel &c. as per any travel arrangements in these times there is a risk involved, so I cannot guarantee 100% refund if at last minute you were to cancel. As per all travel at the moment travel insurance is recommended.
3. Airline tickets: We have no control over any costs associated with this.
I understand it's a difficult situation for all but at our earlier Captains' meetings this year there was good interest in us holding the tournament this year and we have proceeded on that basis. We would hope all teams and players get behind us and support the event even though there is some financial risk involved.
Please note: If we do not have satisfactory numbers ( minimum 80 players required ) and all of the teams support in holding the tournament by June 30th, it will leave us no choice but to cancel the event. We always are thinking of our generous sponsors when we have to make these hard decisions.
If this occurred, we would pass it on to Gold Coast for 2022 and hope everything is back to normal by then.
Financially we would expect all state teams to take responsibility for collection of money by June 30th for all registered players. We will be issuing tax invoice to each team in early July 2021 for payment by end of July.
If any players have not booked accommodation at hotel by June 30th, we cannot guarantee room rate or room.
Please advise your members of this cancellation policy. Let's hope the Victorians get this current situation under control and we can move forward with some confidence, but as we know there is always an element of risk to all.
Any further questions please email or call me.
Thanks,
Graeme Degnan Club Secretary

Hornibrook 2020 ~ Postponed until 2021
The Hornibrook event scheduled for Sydney 11 to 16 Oct 2020 has been cancelled see the details below received from MBE Golf Sydney
It is proposed to hold this event next year details will be advised in due course.
Our own events schedule is on hold until further notice.
Taking into consideration all of the above points we have decided to cancel this years event and the responses already received from state captains gives us the approval to hold the event next year same time and same location and hopefully same golf courses. We will also have to advise you on any cost changes that may occur.
Some people might think we are calling this too early but our best chance of holding a successful event will be next year not this year.”

It is proposed to hold this event next year details will be advised in due course.
Our own events schedule is on hold until further notice.
- “Sponsors - We don’t think it is wise to promote this event and not give our sponsors the best possible avenue to obtain return from their investment, also it would be extremely difficult to find additional sponsors at this time
- Players - We expect it to be extremely hard for players to commit to our event at this time, either due to health reasons or financial capacity during these coming months when a decision must be made.
- Crown plaza The hotel is being flexible with our contract and have offered us the opportunity to postpone our event until next year, subject to availability.
- Coronavirus Listening to the so called experts we are looking at a minimum 6 months shutdown of normal living conditions where one can expect to be freely able to visit restaurants and clubs , hold functions and play golf in normal operating conditions and feel 100% safe in doing these activities.

Good evening members,
It is with great sadness that I advise of the passing of long time past member of the Newcastle Master Builders Association Golf Club, George Buckton.
George unexpectedly passed away this afternoon. Further details are not available at the time of writing. George was 87.

In addition to our thoughts being with George’s family, we also extend sympathy to his regular Belmont Club golfing mates with whom he had a very strong golfing relationship until 18 months ago when health issues necessitated his withdrawal from regular golf.

Greetings all.
It is my sad duty to report that George Christopoulos has died overnight. I understand he was moved into Mary Potter Hospice early last week but took a turn for the worse last night.
George was an extremely hard worker for MBA Golf. He was our immediate past captain. He attended 18 Hornibrooks before his recent illness. The last being in Hobart in 2017.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday 13th November at 11am at The Church of St George 60 Rose St Thebarton. There will be a brief committal service at 1pm in the Florey Chapel Centennial Park. This will be followed by a wake at Alexandra's (his daughter) place at Panorama. Address to be advised.
The Club is arranging a tribute in The Advertiser this week.
Our thoughts go out to Christine, Alexandra and his extended family.

He was a Life Member of MBA Tas Golf Club and served many terms on Committee and as President. He would be very well remembered by our Membership across the country as he attended 24 Hornibrooks and was never the quiet one in the corner.
I would appreciate you passing this sad news on to your Members.
Kind regards

To all Club Members,
It is with deep sadness I report to you the passing of Bob (Bagsy) Barry on Friday. Bobby was a true gentleman and a well respected Member of MBA Tas Golf Club who unfortunately has had a battle with illness over the last 2 years. He attended ten Hornibrooks and was registered to attend number eleven on the Gold Coast in 2014 when his health failed.
The attached photo of the "twins" Bobby and Peter DiPrinzio is from the 2008 Newcastle gallery. In case you can't tell them apart, Bobby is on the right of picture. I would appreciate your help in passing on this sad news to the many friends Bob has made throughout the Master Builders fraternity.
Kind Regards

It is with great sadness that I advise of the passing on Sunday of long time past member of the NSW MB&E Golf Club, Merv Cross. Long serving Captain, another Hornibrook legend, he will be missed.
